With over 45 years of experience in custom design and construction, Aiki Homes takes pride in providing the highest level of craftsmanship.

For all of our projects, we place resource efficiency among the top priorities in delivering a quality end result. We believe in the principle of partnership, understanding that a successful business depends on maintaining solid relationships with clients, community, and the natural world. As a pioneering green builder since 1992, Aiki Homes' philosophy is evident in the large number of successful projects we've completed in Whatcom County.

For every custom home, we start with the client's vision. We then consider the site, its natural environment and landscape, the immediate neighborhood, and where sustainable principles can be applied. We take pride in building resource efficient, healthy homes of the highest quality and level of craftsmanship.

Green building is our passion and has always been the cornerstone of our business — we were building sustainably before "green" and "sustainable" were buzzwords. From advanced framing and passive solar design, to high efficiency insulation and hydronic radiant heat, we do it all.

The Millworks Cohousing Community

Millworks is a sustainably designed cohousing community located in Bellingham, Washington. Each of the eight homes within Millworks was custom designed and crafted to meet the needs and vision of homeowners, with a focus on sustainability, energy efficiency, optimization of passive solar gain, and a minimal environmental impact. All homes are detached, single-family, ranging in size and design, helping to create a unique feeling of community. Shared amenities allow the homes to be smaller than average, each cohousing member having use of a common house with kitchen, library and study room, guest quarters, and a meeting space. All homes are certified Built Green and ENERGY STAR.

Sustainable Design and Construction Since 1992

Every Aiki Homes project integrates a wide range of environmentally friendly features. Products and systems which enhance energy efficiency and indoor air and water quality are incorporated as standard in each of our homes. Our criteria for reviewing and including new systems and materials include product performance and aesthetics along with embodied energy, cost benefit analysis, resource sustainability, recyclability, manufacturers’ labor policies, preferences for local production, and producers' labor policies. We continually evaluate emerging products and technologies, and, to the extent possible, test at least one new environmentally friendly innovation on each project. After almost thirty years of maintaining this practice, our expertise has grown to include a wide ranging practical and theoretical knowledge base around the elements that define green building.

Aiki Homes can be credited with a number of “firsts” in our area including:

  • First LEED Gold rated home
  • First two LEED Platinum rated homes
  • First rainwater harvesting system for domestic reuse
  • First use of a residential constructed wetland septic system
  • First use of dozens of new innovative green building products in Whatcom County including:
    • Hardi materials
    • Decorative concrete
    • Enhanced EPC for waterproof concrete
    • Rastra
    • Zip plywood and Zip-R plywood
    • Chiltrix heat pump for hot water, hydronic heating and cooling
    • Zehnder HRV

These current custom home projects are great examples of how we build green. Features include: advanced framing, passive solar design, high efficiency insulation, hydronic radiant heat, low and non-toxic materials, and whole-house water and air filtration systems.
